How to save on car rentals without even trying

cropped-cropped-img_9754.jpgWe have an upcoming trip to the East Coast this Spring. I booked our airfare, hotel, and car rental back in October 2016. It’s very unlike me to plan this far in advance, but I did. Today, I’ll be sharing with you how I saved on my car rental without even trying.

When it comes to renting a vehicle, I always use Costco Travel. I still do my shopping around by checking Travelocity, Orbitz, etc., but I seem to always find a great deal with Costco Travel. So back in October, I rented a minivan for four days, Costco found a great deal for me with Alamo, and the rental price came to $209.

A few weeks later, I came across a website called Autoslash. I’m always very skeptical when trying out a new website. But I figured, what the heck.

So, what exactly is AutoSlash? Basically, when they find a better rental rate for your existing rental booking, Autoslash will book you automatically at the new lower prices, thus, automatically slashing your rates. Knowing that I had already booked with Costco, when I went to Autoslash, this is what I had to do.

  1. I clicked on TRACK A RENTAL,
  2. It then asked for details on the rental that I had booked. Screen Shot 2017-01-16 at 7.54.54 AM.png
  3. I entered the basic information regarding the rental tScreen Shot 2017-01-16 at 7.58.55 AM.pnghat I booked with Costco, and once entered, I clicked on TRACK.
  4. The tracking begins. I received an email from AutoSlash confirming the request.

There are NO guarantees, but AutoSlash has been working for me. From $209, the price went down t0 $202.11 back in December. Today, when I woke up, I received this email from Autoslash. My $209 original price went down again….down to $181.64. That’s nearly $30.00. It may not be that big of a deal, but this all happened without me having to lift a finger. Hey, $30 is almost a full tank of gas.

And of course, when it comes to travel, at the time of our booking, I used our Chase Sapphire Preferred which earned us 2x per dollar (click here for more info) and it also provides AUTO RENTAL COLLISION DAMAGE WAIVER.

chase-sapphire-preferred“Decline the rental company’s collision insurance and charge the entire rental cost to your card. Coverage is primary and provides reimbursement up to the actual cash value of the vehicle for theft and collision damage for most rental cars in the U.S. and abroad.”

Lastly, I think AutoSlash works best when you book your car rental way ahead of time. In my case, I booked mine 6 months before our trip. Go give it a try.img_9754
