My son accidentally broke our 65 inch TV in our family room. He was playing with the Nintendo Switch (Bowling), and let’s just say his controller flew towards our TV. Surprisingly, the screen glass did not suffer, but the actual TV display had these streaks of lines making it not quite suitable for me to watch Netflix.
No need to rush to buy a new TV
It took me awhile to shop for a new TV. So I told the kids….the TV can wait. We’ll get a new one when we get a new one. No need to rush.
Things I considered before pulling the trigger on a new TV
- Size – Go big or go home. I knew that I wanted a bigger TV. After all, this TV will be sitting in our family room, it is where we gather as a family, a place where our friends watch with us as well. We had a 50 inch plasma when we first moved in to our house, and we had since replaced that with this 65 inch TV that we used a few years before this last mishap. We all agreed that we might as well go for a bigger sized TV, and we’ve seen them as big as 86 inches. So for us, it had to be over 80 inches.
- Brand and product reviews – our past TVs were of different brands. Sony, Pioneer plasma, and most recently, Samsung. We’ve been quite happy with our Samsung, and somewhat focused on trying to get another Samsung TV.
- Price – I learned that most of the TVs that were over 80 inches in size were over $1,000. I didn’t want to spend over $1,500 so I gave myself a threshold to find something in the $1,300 range before taxes.
- Manufacturer Warranty – many of the products typically come with 1 or 2 years of manufacturer warranty
- Extended Warranty options – retailers also offer additional warranty, many of them charge for this additional protection. There are credit cards that also offer warranty extension when you use the card when making the purchase
Why I chose Costco
We’ve been Costco members for over 20 years. What we love about Costco, they stand by the products they sell. They do have an excellent return policy, 100% satisfaction guarantee, and they carry many of the major brands and products that are highly rated.
With my TV, I shopped directly inside my local Costco, but the TV I wanted was only sold via Costco.com, meaning I had to wait a few days for the TV to be shipped. These are the benefits of buying our TV at Costco:
I did a bit of shopping during Amazon Prime Day, and I couldn’t find a TV that would work for me. I also checked Sam’s Club, Best Buy, and all roads led me to Costco. I purchased Samsung 82″ Class – Q6DT Series – 4K UHD QLED LCD TV. The sale price on this TV was $1,399.

This TV comes with:
- Two-year manufacturer warranty
- Three-year Allstate Protection Plan Bundle (valued at $99.99).
- Plus, two additional years of warranty
That’s a total of 7 years of warranty.
How did I get two additional years of warranty?
Thanks to my Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi. According to Citi:
Get an extra 24 months added to your warranty when you purchase items at least in part with your Citi card and/or your Costco credit card reward certificate. In the event of a covered failure, the item will be repaired or you will be reimbursed up to the amount charged on your Citi card (including Costco credit card reward certificate) or the cost to replace the item, whichever is less, up to $10,000.
- Coverage begins when the manufacturer’s warranty, or an extended warranty you bought, expires.
- In no event will total coverage exceed seven years from the purchase date
What’s Covered
- Purchases made by you using your Citi card and/or your Costco credit card reward certificate
What’s Not Covered
- Cars, boats, aircraft or any motorized land, air or water vehicles and their original equipment. Tires are not covered
- Items that do not come with a manufacturer’s warranty.
So, the 7 years of warranty, that was a sweet deal. But it gets better.
How I saved another $429
Two weeks after purchasing the TV from Costco online, I checked Slickdeals like I always do for any random deals. I came across this Frontpage post – a Samsung TV, 82 inches for $999. Hmmmm….I stopped.

Costco’s Price Adjustment Policy
It looked vaguely familiar. I checked my online Costco receipt from two weeks ago for $1399 and compared it with this TV for $999 – it was the exact same TV. To be honest, in all the years we’ve had Costco membership, we’ve never had to do a price match or adjustment. So I went on the Internet and searched for Costco’s policy on Price Adjustment to see if this would work. Here’s what I found:
Please read the following to understand what may be eligible for a price adjustment:
- Eligibility limited to non-resale members and/or products. Resellers must purchase items during valid promotional dates in order to receive the promotional price. Limits apply.
- For members other than resellers, only purchases made within 30 days prior to a change in price, and within applicable promotional item limits, are eligible for a price adjustment.
- Costco does not price match with other sellers.
- We reserve the right to deny price adjustments at our sole discretion.
How to Request a Price Adjustment
Costco.com purchases: Select Request a Price Adjustment. Once approved, credits are typically issued within 5 to 7 business days to the original form of payment.
All I had to do was enter the key information such as the:
- order #
- membership #,
- date of purchase
- amount I paid, and the amount it’s selling now
The process could not get any easier. This took place on a Sunday night when I submitted the price adjustment form. By early Wednesday morning, Costco issued a $429.00 adjustment.

The takeaways
We have dozens of credit cards that we could’ve used so we could earn points with our purchase. At the end of the day, I decided to not only find the right sized TV with a great review and price, but I also opted to ensure I get additional coverage, and in this case, 7 years of warranty. The icing on the cake? The price adjustment. Who would’ve thought I’d get another $429 credit when the price dropped.
How about you? Have you used Costco’s Price Adjustment Policy? How did it go?
