Ok so what are Transfer Bonus offers?

We always talk about ways to stretch your points. Some bookings could be done using your credit card’s travel portal. When you do so, there are no transfer of points needed. If you find a hotel or flight, and you have the points required to book…then you could book directly using your credit card’s travel portal. It’s that easy, but it’s not always the best alternative.

Transferring to travel partners

This one takes some skills. Not the art of transferring in itself, that’s not the hardest part, but finding award space with the travel partner could take some getting used to. You would need to know different travel partners that you credit cards have access to. The list of travel partners do change. Some partners get added or removed, so it’s best for you to simply Google for a current list. For instance, search for “Chase Travel Partners”, or “American Express Travel Partners” – or you could you could also check a list of travel partners by going directly to your credit card travel rewards section.

What’s needed when you transfer to a travel partner?

Think of Venmo….think of Zelle. There’s a sender and recipient. You are the sender, and you are transferring your points to your airline or hotel account. So you would need to make sure you have created an airline or hotel loyalty account. Creating a loyalty account is FREE. Once you’ve created a loyalty account, make sure to save your new loyalty account number.

How to transfer from your credit card to travel partners

Simply go in to your individual credit card account, get to know the features. There should be a section for you to transfer to travel partners. FYI, NOT ALL credit cards have transfer options. For instance, in the world of Chase credit cards, the following credit cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards® will allow you to transfer to travel partners:
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve®
  • Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card
All other Chase credit cards that earn Ultimate Rewards DO NOT give you an option to travel partners. However, if you or someone in your household carry one of the above-mentioned credit cards, you could move or combine points. For instance, let’s say I have points with my Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, and my wife has a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. All I need to do is go to my Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card Ultimate Rewards section, and choose the option to combine points. I could also call Chase and ask them to move or combine the points for me.

What not to do

Do NOT transfer speculatively unless you are super savvy. Why? Once you transfer points from your credit card to the travel partner, there’s no undoing. The points stay with the partner. Make sure that you are certain with your decision in moving the points from the credit card to the airline or hotel.

Are Transfer Bonus offers a good idea?

My rule of thumb is to make sure you have a specific booking in mind. Don’t transfer for the sake of transferring because the offer looked enticing. Once the points move from your credit card account, they are stuck with the airline or hotel.
